Chandausi
These readings are from “The Heart of Eastern Mystical Teaching” by Hari Prasad Shastri (1882-1956).
Shri Dadaji of Aligarh (1854-1910) was a modern day saint of India.
While he kept no formal ashram, many, including Hari Prasad Shastri considered him their spiritual master.
Reading 1: In this reading the father of Shri Dada, Pundit Behari Lalji,
having lost his worldly possessions, visits his son seeking help.
The response of Shri Dada to his father (who had disavowed him after Shri Dada
took up a religious life instead of entering into the family business)
is a lesson in charity and forgiveness as is the response of his wife who
offers her future financial security to her father-in-law.
Reading 2: In this reading, a group of traveling Udasi Sadhus seek to celebrate
the day of the passing of their guru according to tradition.
Reading 3: In this reading from 1896, Shri Dada speaks at the temple of Rustogis
in Chandausi on the occasion of the annual festival of Raksha-Bandhan,
the ceremony of “binding the protection thread”.
Reading 4: In this reading Shri Dada addresses his disciples and a young visitor,
who has been asked by his father’s guru to become acquainted with the Holy Man and his teachings.
